Luis Garcia questions Arda Guler red-card decision after Sevilla lose to Real Madrid

Luis Garcia suggested the referee may not have been referred to the pitchside monitor to review Arda Guler’s challenge because Sevilla could have reduced the gap between Real Madrid and Barcelona before El Clasico.

Sevilla’s players appealed for Guler to be sent off during the first half after the Real Madrid midfielder struck Peque Fernandez in the face. However, no red card was awarded and the incident was not reviewed on the monitor.

Asked about the decision following Sevilla’s 4-1 defeat by Real Madrid, Garcia said: “I don’t know, perhaps because if we had won, I would have increased the gap between them and Barcelona to nine points before El Clasico.”

Real Madrid secured a convincing victory at the Santiago Bernabeu in the ninth round of La Liga, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice. Guler and Yan Diomande also found the net for the home side.

Manuel Sebastian scored Sevilla’s only goal.

The result took Real Madrid to 21 points and third place in the table, while Sevilla remain on 14 points in sixth.

Diomande’s landmark performance

Diomande also created a goal in a second consecutive match in all competitions, the first time he has achieved that in his career in Europe’s major leagues.

The 19-year-old became the first player aged under 20 to score and provide an assist in the same La Liga match for the club during the 21st century. He achieved the feat at 19 years and 338 days old.

Diomande surpassed the previous record held by Jude Bellingham, who had done so at 20 years and 51 days.
