Mamelodi Sundowns held by Wiliete SC as Teboho Mokoena suffers injury

Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a goalless draw by Wiliete SC at half-time in their CAF Champions League tie on Sunday, with midfielder Teboho Mokoena forced off injured shortly before the break.

The African champions had chances to take control at Estadio Nacionale da Tundavala but could not find a way through the Angolan side’s defence.

Mamelodi Sundowns were without goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and defender Aubrey Modiba. Miguel Cardoso selected fellow Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ricardo Goss, while Fawaaz Basadien came into the side at left-back after starting the midweek victory over Richards Bay.

Wiliete SC included former Orlando Pirates winger Gilberto in their starting line-up. The attacker was aiming to add to the goal he scored during the first preliminary round.

Sundowns made a positive start and nearly opened the scoring when Brayan Leon got behind the Wiliete defence. His effort was heading towards goal but was cleared off the line.

Teboho Mokoena then tested Wiliete goalkeeper Elber from distance, but the shot was saved.

Cardoso’s side were required to remain patient against a well-organised defence. Their next clear opportunity arrived in the 25th minute, when Tashreeq Matthews created room for himself inside the penalty area before striking powerfully. Elber reacted well to palm the effort away.

Sundowns were dealt a setback five minutes before half-time when Mokoena was unable to continue. He was replaced by Bathusi Aubaas, who returned to the team as the visitors reached the interval level.

Mamelodi Sundowns started with Ricardo Goss, Ndamane, Khoza, Matuludi, Fawaaz Basadien, Teboho Mokoena, Allende, Santos, Tashreeq Matthews, Morena and Brayan Leon.

Their substitutes were Pieterse, Lunga, Rayners, Bathusi Aubaas, Zwane, Cele, Van Wyk, Ndlovu and Mvala.
