Former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Joseph Sibiya believes Tshegofatso Mabasa could provide the one missing element in the club’s star-studded squad: a dependable goalscorer.
Sundowns have continued to pose a significant attacking threat this season, but Sibiya says their inability to convert enough of their chances could prevent them from achieving a clean sweep of trophies.
He believes Mabasa, who previously played for Orlando Pirates, would be well suited to the role and could make the most of the opportunities created by the reigning domestic champions.
“At Sundowns, the system remains the same and there is continuity. This is the result of having a long-term plan,” Sibiya told KickOff.
“We could achieve a clean sweep of trophies this season with the players we have, although I believe we still need a reliable finisher.
“If we can sign Mabasa, he would be a good acquisition. We need a finisher, and he is one. Sundowns create chances, and he would score plenty of goals.”
Mabasa currently plays as a striker for Moroccan Botola Pro League club Maghreb de Fes.
Sibiya’s assessment comes as Sundowns continue to build on the consistency of their playing system and long-term squad planning. While he is encouraged by the quality already available to head coach Rulani Mokwena’s side, he believes the addition of Mabasa would give them greater efficiency in front of goal.
