Red Arrows take first-leg lead over Kaizer Chiefs in CAF Confederation Cup

Red Arrows manager Chisi Mbewe praised his players after their 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second qualifying round.

Alassane Diarra’s 76th-minute goal at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium gave the Zambian Premier League side a narrow advantage to take into next week’s return fixture in South Africa.

Mbewe said Red Arrows could have built a more substantial lead after creating several chances against the Betway Premiership campaigners, but believes his team are capable of completing the job and reaching the knockout rounds.

“Coming into this game, we knew it was not going to be an easy encounter, considering the experience and maturity Kaizer Chiefs have in this competition,” Mbewe told ZamFoot.

The Red Arrows coach was pleased with the way his side responded to the challenge, despite their inability to convert more of their opportunities.

“I am happy with the way the boys fought and approached the game. Despite missing several chances, they showed great commitment and created numerous opportunities,” he said.

“Sometimes, that is the nature of football. You can create so many chances and end up scoring just one goal,” added Mbewe.

Diarra’s strike separated the teams after Red Arrows had put Kaizer Chiefs under pressure, leaving the Zambian side to defend their slender lead in the second leg.

Mbewe said his players must use the time before the return match to improve their performance and avoid allowing Kaizer Chiefs to control the game.

“However, we have to go back to training and continue improving. We need to be solid, remain compact and ensure that we do not give Kaizer Chiefs the space to dictate play,” he said.

“We are pleased with the result, but we know there are areas we need to work on as we prepare for the next match in South Africa.”
