Siyabonga Ngezana steps up return from knee surgery with FCSB training

South Africa defender Siyabonga Ngezana has returned to training with Romanian club FCSB after recovering from knee surgery.

The 29-year-old centre-back has yet to play for FCSB this season after undergoing the operation in June. He sustained the injury during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), but postponed surgery in an attempt to remain in contention for Bafana Bafana’s World Cup squad. He was ultimately not selected.

Ngezana has missed 11 matches for FCSB this season, but his return to training means he is now approaching a comeback to competitive action.

The Sebokeng-born defender joined FCSB from Kaizer Chiefs three years ago and has made 106 appearances for the Romanian club. His next challenge will be to establish himself again at international level.

Ngezana has won 14 caps for Bafana Bafana, although competition for a place in central defence is intense.

Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane can also call on Ime Okon, Olwethu Makhanya, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Khulumani Ndamane, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Lebone Seema.

Thabo Moloisane, Malibongwe Khoza and Tylon Smith are also among the defenders waiting for an opportunity.

Bafana Bafana’s next fixtures come in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, with Kenya visiting Orlando Stadium on Friday, 13 November.

The return fixture will take place in Nairobi on Tuesday, 17 November.
