Rasheedat Ajibade speaks after injury setback

Paris Saint-Germain and Nigeria captain Rasheedat Ajibade has provided an update on her condition following an injury scare during the Super Falcons’ 5-0 victory over Comoros in their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign.

Ajibade sustained the injury during Tuesday’s second-leg encounter after a collision with Comoros defender Diore Miriame Kaina Said, forcing her out of the contest around the 20th minute.

The incident raised concerns about the forward’s fitness, with reports suggesting she could face at least three months on the sidelines after an MRI scan reportedly revealed a fracture to her right ankle.

However, in a statement released on Thursday, the Super Falcons skipper revealed that medical assessments were still ongoing, with further updates expected when more information becomes available.

“Scans and medical consultations are ongoing and more updates will be shared when available. At the moment, I am doing okay and my spirits are high,” Ajibade stated.

The Nigerian international also expressed pride in leading the Super Falcons as they began their journey towards qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games, highlighting the unity, discipline and fighting spirit displayed by her teammates during the qualifying fixture.

“It is an honour to lead this group of women. I am proud of how our team began its road to the Olympics, and of the unity, discipline, and fight each player brought to the national team,” she added.

The forward further expressed gratitude to everyone who reached out with messages of encouragement, prayers and kind words following her injury.

She specifically acknowledged the support of her teammates, family, technical and medical staff, as well as the fans who have stood by her during the difficult period.

With her immediate future now centred on recovery, Ajibade stressed that her priority is to regain full fitness and return to action stronger for both club and country.

“For now, my focus is on recovery and returning stronger for club and country,” she said.

Although the reported three-month recovery period could prove a significant setback, the full extent of Ajibade’s absence remains uncertain as medical consultations continue.

Her recovery will be closely monitored by Nigeria and her club, with the Super Falcons captain hoping to overcome the setback and resume her career after making a strong start to the country’s Olympic qualifying campaign.
