Reece James undergoes successful knee surgery, Chelsea confirm

Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone successful knee surgery, the club have announced.

The England international has been troubled by recurring injuries, which have kept him out of a number of matches for the Blues. Chelsea did not give an expected timescale for his return.

James, 26, missed Chelsea’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after being assessed by club doctors. He sustained the injury during training, and subsequent tests concluded that surgery was necessary.

The club said James had already begun his recovery and would receive support from Chelsea’s medical staff at the Cobham training centre throughout his rehabilitation.

Chelsea wished their captain a speedy recovery and said they would continue to support him until he is able to return to action.

James’ latest injury comes after a period in which repeated fitness problems have limited his appearances for Chelsea. The club’s announcement did not provide further details about the nature of the knee problem or when he might be available again.

Chelsea’s win over Bournemouth lifted them to 10 points and fourth place in the English Premier League after six rounds.

Joao Pedro and Jordan Henderson each scored twice for Chelsea, while Morgan Rogers also found the net. Evanilson scored Bournemouth’s only goal.

Bournemouth remain on three points and sit 18th in the table.
