Happy Mashiane could be given another opportunity to revive his career after impressing during an assessment with Siwelele FC.
The 28-year-old utility player has been without a club since June 2026, when his 12-year association with Kaizer Chiefs ended by mutual agreement.
Mashiane joined the Mangaung-based side for assessment during the recent FIFA international break, having previously spent several weeks training with Stellenbosch FC in July. Stellenbosch coach Gavin Hunt chose not to offer him a contract, with the manager concerned that Mashiane was not sufficiently match fit to make an immediate impact in competitive football.
A move to Siwelele would offer the defender a return to a club he already knows well. He spent the second half of last season there on loan, although his opportunities were limited.
Under former coach Lehlohonolo Seema, Mashiane was unable to establish himself as a regular starter. He made only one official appearance since September 2025, with Neo Rapoo preferred at left-back.
Siwelele head coach Godfrey Mosoetsa has nevertheless highlighted Mashiane’s experience in the top flight as a potential asset for a team struggling at the start of the domestic campaign.
“He (Mashiane) started training with us during the FIFA break, and he has been training very well,” Mosoetsa told journalists at the 2026 Carling Knockout Cup draw in Fourways on Wednesday evening.
“There’s just certain things that need to be sorted out administratively, and then we will take it from there, but we cannot deny the fact that he’s a very good player who’s got PSL experience.
“He played for Kaizer Chiefs while he was still young. So he has a lot to offer, but it also lies with what happens behind the scenes with management and his agent sorting out any other outstanding issues.”
The comments suggest Mashiane’s future will depend on administrative matters being settled between Siwelele’s management and the player’s agent. No agreement has yet been confirmed.
Siwelele are currently third from bottom in the 2026/27 Betway Premiership and are still waiting for their first league win of the season. Their technical team will aim to change that run of form in a demanding double-header against Polokwane City.
The first meeting will take place away from home on Sunday in the league. Siwelele will then return to face Rise and Shine in the opening round of the Carling Knockout Cup exactly one week later.
