Reeve Frosler has called on Kaizer Chiefs’ senior players to use the progress of the club’s young South African internationals as motivation to earn their own places in Bafana Bafana.
Kaizer Chiefs have supplied a strong contingent to South Africa’s Under-20 and Under-23 teams, but their representation at senior international level has been considerably less significant.
That contrast was put to Frosler, who said the achievements of the younger players should prompt those already established in the first-team squad to raise their standards.
“I think that’s for us senior team players to look at them and say, if our junior teams are being able to do it,” Frosler said.
“We can learn something from our junior teams, and we have to try to do better and get into the national team ourselves.”
The right-back presented the junior players’ progress as a positive development for the club rather than something for the senior squad to resent. He believes their emergence also demonstrates the potential within Kaizer Chiefs’ development system.
“It’s positive for us, seeing these young talents coming through, and hopefully they can continue growing and hopefully take over in the first team as well,” he added.
Frosler’s comments place responsibility on the current senior group to match the progress being made by the club’s younger representatives. While several Kaizer Chiefs players have been involved with South Africa’s junior national teams, fewer have established themselves in the Bafana Bafana setup.
The defender’s message is that the younger players’ international involvement should serve as a standard for the senior squad. He and his teammates must improve sufficiently to compete for recognition at the highest level.
At the same time, Frosler said the emergence of the next generation could eventually strengthen both Kaizer Chiefs and South Africa. The club’s young players are continuing to develop, with the hope that they can progress into the first team and later challenge for senior national selection.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the situation highlights both the strength of their youth pathway and the challenge facing the established players. The club’s junior internationals have created an example for the senior squad, while their development could provide a future supply of first-team players.
