Siyamthanda Qashani makes bright start to Banyana Banyana career

Siyamthanda Qashani says her international debut has been “an amazing experience” after helping Banyana Banyana reach the third round of the CAF Women’s Olympic qualifiers.

The University of Pretoria forward played in both legs of South Africa’s second-round tie against Madagascar, which Banyana Banyana won 7-0 on aggregate in Bloemfontein.

Qashani said she had quickly adapted to the national team environment and praised her team-mates for making her feel welcome. She also highlighted the collective performance that secured South Africa’s progress.

“I feel great, it has been a wonderful experience. I am so happy that the team managed to win, it was teamwork the whole time. No one was greater than anyone, we all played our role to help the team qualify for the next round. My debut was an amazing experience and I am happy with the team that welcomed me. I am glad that I was impactful and won the two games,” said Qashani.

The forward also credited head coach Desiree Ellis with helping her adjust to the demands of international football and understand the differences between playing for her country and at club level.

Qashani said Ellis had provided guidance throughout the tie, while also giving her the freedom to ask questions and express herself on the pitch.

“Coach Desiree Ellis has been amazing. She has been guiding me throughout on handling high performance, as well as the difference between playing for the national team and playing at club level. She allows me to ask questions, gives me direction and allows me to express myself the best way I can. I couldn’t score today after attempting a few times, but she encouraged me to continue trying,” added Qashani.

Although she was unable to find the net despite several attempts, Qashani said Ellis’s encouragement helped her maintain her confidence and keep looking for an opportunity.

The tie also gave Qashani her first experience of playing in front of a large crowd in Bloemfontein. She said the occasion had strengthened her desire to work harder and continue building her experience of international football.
