McKenzie to brief Safa over stalled VAR rollout

South Africa’s sport, arts and culture minister, Gayton McKenzie, will hold a briefing with the South African Football Association (Safa) about video assistant refereeing at Freedom Park in Pretoria on Wednesday.

McKenzie revealed in August that he had given Safa 21 days to return money allocated for the implementation of VAR. He also warned that he would take action if the funds were not repaid.

The minister had provided Safa with millions of rand directly to support the initial rollout of the technology and train referees. VAR had been expected to be introduced in the top flight this season, but that did not happen.
