Vincent Kompany slams Michael Olise for ‘stupid’ red card as Bayern Munich throw away victory
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has criticised Michael Olise for a “stupid” red card after the French winger’s dismissal contributed to his side dropping points in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Viking Stavanger in the Champions League.
Olise was sent off in the 74th minute after throwing the ball at Viking captain Zlatko Tripic following a confrontation, earning a second yellow card for unsporting conduct.
Bayern had fought back from a two-goal half-time deficit to lead 3-2 before conceding a late equaliser with 10 men, leaving Kompany frustrated by a result he believes his team should have managed better.
The draw against the Champions League debutants was particularly disappointing for the German champions, who had recovered impressively to take control of the contest before Olise’s moment of indiscipline.
Kompany fumes over Olise’s dismissal
Kompany did not hide his disappointment with the winger, insisting that such incidents could have serious consequences as the season progresses.
“This red card is so stupid. We addressed it clearly. Michael needs to keep better control of himself in those situations. He knows that. You could see that he felt sorry for the team. This was not a final or a semi-final today. But these moments are decisive over the course of a season,” the Bayern coach told Prime Video.
Olise lost his composure after a tussle with Tripic and threw the ball towards the Viking captain’s head, prompting the referee to show him a second yellow card.
The dismissal shifted the balance of the match at a crucial stage, with Bayern forced to defend their advantage while a man down. Viking capitalised before the final whistle to secure a share of the points.
Kompany also suggested that Olise should have shown greater awareness of the situation, particularly given Bayern’s position in the match.
“I also told Michael that the No. 10 was smarter,” Kompany added. “Hopefully this will be one of those moments where you say: we learned from it and became stronger.”
Kane demands accountability
Harry Kane, who scored twice for Bayern, also called on Olise to learn from the incident and take responsibility for his actions.
The England captain acknowledged the winger’s disappointment but stressed that his reaction had hurt the team at a critical moment.
“Michael is absolutely devastated, but he has to take responsibility. He has to learn from it,” Kane said.
Kane’s comments echoed Kompany’s message that individual discipline remains essential, even when emotions run high during competitive matches.
Bayern had shown considerable character to overturn their 2-0 half-time deficit and move ahead 3-2. However, their inability to hold on to the lead meant Olise’s dismissal became a major talking point after the final whistle.
Arsenal clash awaits suspended Olise
Olise will now miss Bayern’s Champions League meeting with English champions Arsenal next Wednesday, depriving Kompany of one of his key attacking options for a significant fixture.
The winger will be disappointed to miss the encounter, particularly after his contribution to Bayern’s comeback against Viking Stavanger was overshadowed by his late dismissal.
Kane acknowledged the importance of the upcoming matches but insisted that the team must move forward from the setback.
“We have some big Champions League games coming up. He will be devastated to miss them, but that’s football,” Kane added.
