Benni McCarthy names Kenya squad for qualifiers

Kenya striker Micah Obiero says he is benefiting from working with Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy, describing the former South Africa international as a valuable mentor.

McCarthy has faced criticism in Kenya following his comments that the country would not win the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

The former Cape Town City manager has also endured a difficult start to his tenure, failing to win either of his first two matches in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. Kenya lost to Guinea before drawing with Eritrea.

However, Obiero, who plays for English fifth-tier club Carlisle United, has spoken positively about his experience working with the South African coach.

The striker said McCarthy’s experience as a former forward had been particularly beneficial to his development.

“Being a striker as well, he gives me pointers and he’s a good mentor to have,” Obiero told Carlisle United’s media team.

Obiero also praised McCarthy for his understanding and support during the recent international break, when the player was allowed to leave the national team camp early.

“He looks after the players. He was very, very good with me leaving early. He was very helpful in that and understanding of it. I just want to thank him for that as well,” he added.

The 24-year-old said working with a coach who had achieved so much during his playing career was a valuable opportunity.

“It’s a really good experience having him with the pedigree that he has, the things that he’s won and the goals that he’s scored,” Obiero said.

“As a striker, it’s a good thing for me to have him, but also as a whole, he’s a good coach.”

McCarthy, who enjoyed a successful playing career with clubs including Porto and Blackburn Rovers, was appointed Kenya coach as the country prepares for the 2027 AFCON.

The Harambee Stars will be under pressure to improve their performances in the qualifiers as they seek to build momentum ahead of the tournament on home soil.
