The result was Petroleum Assiut’s first win in all competitions this season. Before Saturday’s match, they had recorded two draws and four defeats in the league and the Egypt Capital Cup.
The three points moved Petroleum Assiut up to 16th place with five points. Abu Qir Fertilizers remain 18th on three points after suffering their fifth consecutive defeat.
Abu Qir Fertilizers had two goals ruled out for offside in the first half, both scored by Ali Hussein. Petroleum Assiut were also fortunate when the crossbar denied the visitors a clear opportunity in the 45th minute.
Petroleum Assiut eventually broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. Mohamed Eid met Abdelrahman Medhat’s cross with a header to put his side ahead.
It was Petroleum Assiut’s first goal in 442 minutes, since Ahmed Khaled scored against Suez Petrojet in the opening round.
Fathy Gamal then doubled the lead in the 83rd minute, leaving Petroleum Assiut in control of the match.
Abu Qir Fertilizers continued to push for a way back into the game, but Petroleum Assiut goalkeeper Ahmed Abdel Aziz produced two impressive saves to deny a dangerous opportunity in the 85th minute.
Ali Hussein pulled a goal back in the third minute of stoppage time, but his late strike was not enough to prevent Petroleum Assiut from securing their first win of the campaign.
