Manchester City send Paris Saint-Germain warning with emphatic win at Liverpool

Manchester City strengthened their position at the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, taking advantage of their hosts being reduced to 10 men in the second half.

The result maintained City’s perfect start to the season. They have collected 18 points from six matches, while Liverpool remain on nine points in ninth place.

There was little to separate the sides during a largely uneventful first half, which ended goalless. The match changed in the 62nd minute when Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

City needed only three minutes to make their numerical advantage count. Erling Haaland opened the scoring with a powerful finish from inside the penalty area.

The visitors quickly extended their lead in the 65th minute when substitute Jeremy Doku produced an excellent strike to make it 2-0.

Rayan Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute after skilfully dribbling past Liverpool defender Jeremy Jacquet before finding the net.

The match was City’s first since an independent commission found the club had breached Premier League financial rules over a nine-year period. Manchester City have appealed against that ruling.

Pep Guardiola’s side will now turn their attention to their next challenge, when they host French club Paris Saint-Germain at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday in the first round of the Champions League.
