Rayan Cherki shines as Manchester City thrash Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield
Manchester City produced a dominant performance to beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday, with French forward of Algerian descent, Rayan Cherki, Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku all scoring after the hosts were reduced to 10 men in the second half.
Liverpool’s hopes of securing a positive result suffered a major setback when midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute after receiving a second yellow card.
City took advantage almost immediately, with Haaland opening the scoring before Doku doubled their lead with a superb finish. Cherki then completed the victory in the 78th minute.
Gravenberch dismissal changes the game
Liverpool were left with a difficult task after Gravenberch’s dismissal for a foul, which earned him his second booking of the match.
Manchester City capitalised on their numerical advantage just three minutes later. Haaland reacted quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area and fired a low effort into the bottom-left corner to give the visitors the lead.
The goal shifted the momentum firmly in City’s favour as Liverpool struggled to contain their opponents.
Doku delivers a moment of brilliance
Jeremy Doku made his mark in the 68th minute, producing an excellent finish to extend City’s advantage to 2-0.
The Belgian winger controlled a well-weighted pass with an impressive first touch before striking the ball from the edge of the penalty area into the top-right corner.
Doku’s goal added further punishment for Liverpool and highlighted City’s attacking quality, with the forward’s Ghanaian heritage also making his contribution noteworthy for African football supporters.
Cherki seals emphatic victory
Cherki put the result beyond doubt in the 78th minute after a well-timed pass from Josko Gvardiol split Liverpool’s defence.
The French midfielder received the ball inside the penalty area and calmly sent a low shot into the middle of the goal to complete the 3-0 victory.
City’s three second-half goals secured an emphatic result at Anfield, with Liverpool unable to recover after losing Gravenberch.
