Paris FC’s €25m signing Patrick Zabi waits for his Ligue 1 breakthrough

Patrick Zabi has yet to make a Ligue 1 start for Paris FC despite the club investing nearly €25m, including bonuses, to sign the highly rated midfielder from Stade de Reims.

The 20-year-old Ivory Coast international has played only 42 minutes of competitive football after the opening five league matches, a limited return for a player brought in as a major investment for the future.

However, there is no concern within Zabi’s camp about his restricted involvement so far. According to L’Equipe, the midfielder has continued to impress in training, where his commitment and technical ability have been noted by those at the club.

That form has not yet been enough to persuade manager Liam Rosenior to name him in the starting XI. Zabi is still waiting for his opportunity in a Paris FC midfield and attack where competition for places is strong.

Paris FC remain convinced by Zabi’s potential

The club have not questioned the decision to make such a substantial investment in the player. Paris FC sporting director Marco Neppe had identified Zabi well before his move and played a significant part in bringing him to the club.

Neppe also helped persuade the Arnault family, Paris FC’s majority shareholder, to back a player viewed internally as a long-term prospect.

The club’s approach has been to allow Zabi time to adapt and develop, rather than place additional pressure on him because of his transfer fee. He has received regular support and reassurance, particularly from Neppe, who continues to show confidence in the young midfielder.

Zabi has already provided evidence of the qualities that attracted Paris FC to him. He came off the bench against Nice on 30 August during a 3-0 victory and was deployed on the flank in attack.

The Ivorian, who has two international caps, repeatedly made runs that troubled his direct opponent before setting up Vincent Marchetti for a goal. It was an encouraging contribution and offered a reminder of why Paris FC were prepared to pay such a significant fee for his services.

Known as “Zabi la Magie” during his youth, the player has qualities that the club believe can develop further at the highest level. The challenge now is to turn those flashes of promise into consistent Ligue 1 performances.

For the moment, patience remains necessary. Zabi must continue earning Rosenior’s trust and make the most of the opportunities that come his way. His lack of playing time at 20 does not have to damage his progress, but the expectations created by the €25m investment will ultimately be judged by what he delivers on the pitch.

Paris FC’s next league fixture is against FC Lorient in the sixth round of the French championship, giving Zabi another chance to push for a greater role.
