Cele says focus helped him overcome difficult Kaizer Chiefs exit before Sundowns move

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Thabo Cele says concentrating on his own progress helped him deal with the uncertainty surrounding his departure from Kaizer Chiefs.

The 29-year-old was not included when Kaizer Chiefs travelled abroad for their pre-season camp, with negotiations over compensation between the two clubs delaying his move to the Brazilians.

Cele said he chose to ignore the distractions during that period and remain focused on his work. He believes joining Mamelodi Sundowns has now given him further motivation to improve.

“For me, it’s always been the same thing to keep on working hard, focus on myself, forget the distractions that are outside,” said Cele.

“Since growing up, when I was young, I always wanted to find myself and work to be in this kind of position. So, me being here, it’s massive and also a motivation to go to the next level.”

The midfielder was speaking after helping Mamelodi Sundowns win their second trophy of the season.

The club lifted the MTN8 after beating Orlando Pirates in Saturday’s final at Moses Mabhida Stadium, giving Cele a title early in his time with the team.

Cele said he was grateful to have joined a squad driven to win more silverware and was particularly pleased to be part of the side that ended Mamelodi Sundowns’ wait for the MTN8 trophy.

“First of all, I’d like to give thanks to the most high for this moment, this opportunity,” he added.

“It’s a blessing to be part of this team because it’s a team that’s always, you know, looking for more. And today, we went in the game looking to win the final because it’s been a while since we won this MTN8. So, yeah, it’s a blessing to be part of this team.”
