Barcelona take control against Getafe as Anthony Gordon and Gabriel Jesus score

Barcelona dominated possession and created the clearer chances as they established a 2-0 lead over Getafe in their La Liga week eight meeting, with Anthony Gordon and Gabriel Jesus on target.

Gordon opened the scoring after a strong individual run on the left. He beat defenders on the edge of the penalty area before shooting; the ball took a deflection off a defender and went into the net.

Barcelona continued to press and doubled their advantage through Gabriel Jesus. The forward won possession inside the Getafe penalty area during sustained pressure, moved into space and struck a powerful shot into the left side of the goal.

The opening stages were controlled almost entirely by Barcelona, who spent long periods circulating the ball in Getafe’s defensive half. Their possession reached 85%, compared with 15% for Getafe, while the visitors also registered six shots to Getafe’s none.

Dani Olmo went close when he collected the ball in front of goal and saw his effort saved by David Soria, who turned it behind for a corner. Olmo later had another attempt from inside the area blocked by a defender.

Lamine Yamal also tested the Getafe defence. He sent a dangerous shot over the bar from the edge of the area and delivered several threatening set-pieces, although Getafe’s defence managed to clear them. One free-kick was headed away by the first defender, while another corner from the right was dealt with before it reached the danger area.

Barcelona’s other attacks included a low cross from Lamine Yamal that was cut out by the defence, and a move in which Anthony Gordon carried the ball forward before finding Javi. His shot was blocked and cleared.

Javi also tried to create an opening with a precise chipped pass from the edge of the penalty area, but a Getafe defender intervened at the right moment. Gerard Martin sent another through ball into the box, although it lacked the pace to trouble Soria.

Rodri Hernandez overhit an attempted pass towards Jules Kounde, allowing the ball to run out for a Getafe goal kick. Eric Garcia then forced Soria into a firm save with a driven effort from the Getafe half, before the goalkeeper comfortably collected another lofted pass from the Barcelona defender.

Getafe’s limited opportunities included a weak effort from Ivan Azon towards the right corner from the edge of the area, which Joan Garcia gathered without difficulty.

Barcelona’s Chavi Espart saw a cross from the left drift harmlessly wide, but later won a free-kick in a defensive midfield position. He also raced towards goal before a recovering defender made a strong challenge to halt the attack.

Jules Kounde was booked for a foul on Johan Mojica in midfield, while Getafe made an early forced substitution. Kiko Femenia, Zaid Romero and Abdelkebir Abqar were among the players listed in the match coverage.
