South African defender Aden McCarthy played the full 90 minutes as Sabah FC earned a point with a 0-0 draw away to Azerbaijan Premier League leaders Neftci at Bakcell Arena on Friday evening.
The former Kaizer Chiefs defender produced another strong performance at the centre of Sabah’s defence, helping his side extend their unbeaten run to six successive matches.
The result meant Sabah missed the opportunity to move above Neftci at the top of the table. Both teams now have 16 points after seven matches.
Sabah can still claim first place by winning their game in hand, with Neftci having played seven matches compared with one for Sabah.
McCarthy’s latest appearance follows his impressive involvement in Europe, where the former Chiefs player helped his side reach the UEFA Champions League league phase.
Sabah manager Valdas Dambrauskas will now turn his attention to the team’s next fixture, when they face Slavia Praha in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, 13 October.
Sabah are currently 34th in the competition after losing 4-0 away to Manchester United in their opening Champions League fixture.
