Kaizer Chiefs appoint lawyers in R11m stampede damages case

Kaizer Chiefs have appointed attorneys in a legal case involving an R11 million damages claim linked to an alleged stampede at FNB Stadium.

The Soweto club is one of four defendants named in proceedings brought by Gauteng woman Nonhlanhla Celia Khumalo, who is seeking combined damages of R11 million.

Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA), the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and the Minister of Police are also cited in the lawsuit.

Khumalo’s legal representatives, T Matubatuba Attorneys Inc, confirmed the latest development to KickOff.

“Chiefs have just appointed attorneys. We are waiting for their attorneys to file the plea/opposing papers,” the law firm said.

The appointment means Chiefs have now formally taken a step in the ongoing proceedings. Khumalo’s lawyers had previously confirmed that summons had been issued against all four defendants, with the documents to be served in line with court rules.

Alleged incident at FNB Stadium

The claim relates to an alleged stampede during Chiefs’ Betway Premiership match against Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium on September 16, 2025.

Khumalo is reported to have suffered injuries while attending the fixture. She allegedly received emergency medical treatment at the stadium before being taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Chiefs lost the match 3-1.

The case remains before the legal process, with Khumalo’s attorneys now waiting for the club’s legal team to submit its formal response.
