Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Ecuador international Jhegson Mendez as a free agent in January, adding another South American player to Miguel Cardoso’s squad.

Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo reports that the 29-year-old midfielder is set to join the Betway Premiership champions on a three-year contract.

The move would represent another major addition for Sundowns, who are the reigning CAF Champions League winners and continue to strengthen a squad already packed with established talent.

Mendez had previously been linked with a switch to the Tshwane club in August. At that time, Sundowns were reported to have made a lucrative three-year offer in an effort to bring the midfielder to South Africa.

However, Mendez was said to have turned down the proposal while playing for Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle.

He returned to Independiente del Valle in January 2025 after earlier spells in Major League Soccer in the United States, Brazil with Sao Paulo and Spain with Elche.

Although his current agreement with Independiente del Valle is reportedly due to remain in place until December 2026, the latest reports suggest the midfielder could leave before the end of that contract and move to Sundowns.

Experience in midfield

Mendez is primarily a defensive midfielder and is known for the work-rate and solidity he can provide in the centre of the pitch. His arrival would also give Sundowns another player capable of contributing to their attacking play.

The Ecuadorian’s international background would be an additional asset. He has represented his country at major tournaments, including the Copa America and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Should the transfer be completed, Mendez would become the latest South American arrival at Sundowns as the club builds for the future.

The squad already includes Chilean midfielder Marcelo Allende, Brazilian attacker Arthur Sales and Colombian forward Brayan Leon.

Mendez’s reported arrival would therefore further increase Sundowns’ options in midfield while adding another player with experience of football in different countries and at international level. The deal is expected to take effect in January, with the midfielder reportedly set to sign for three years.
