The Saudi Arabian Football Federation has rejected reports that Greece manager Georgios Donis is set to leave his role before the 2027 Asian Cup.
Reports had claimed the federation had decided to dismiss Donis and reached an agreement with Spain’s Roberto Martinez to take charge of the national team, only three months before the start of the Asian tournament.
However, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation issued an official statement on X on 8 October 2026, insisting that Donis would remain in charge.
“With reference to the media reports concerning the head coach of the senior national team, Mr Georgios Donis, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation would like to confirm that the coach remains with the national team and that there is no decision regarding a change to the technical staff, as has been reported,” the statement said.
It added: “The Saudi Arabian Football Federation calls on all media outlets to verify the accuracy of information and obtain it from official sources.”
The clarification followed growing debate over Donis’ position, with reports of a possible change in the coaching staff emerging as Saudi Arabia prepares for next year’s major tournament.
Donis has enjoyed notable success since taking charge of Saudi Arabia, guiding the team to its first major title in 23 years when it won the 27th edition of the Gulf Cup, known as Gulf 27.
That achievement led Saudi supporters to oppose the idea of dismissing the Greek coach. Fans have called for him to be given more time, particularly with the Asian Cup approaching.
The 19th edition of the Asian Cup will be hosted by Saudi Arabia, with matches taking place in Riyadh, Jeddah and Khobar. The tournament is scheduled to run from 7 January to 5 February next year.
Saudi Arabia will be seeking to win the Asian Cup for a fourth time. Their most recent triumph came in 1996, meaning they have been waiting 30 years for another continental title.
