Durban City appoint former Bafana Bafana midfielder Eric Tinkler as head coach
Durban City FC have appointed Eric Tinkler as their new head coach, bringing the experienced former Bafana Bafana midfielder back to the Betway Premiership just weeks after his departure from Asante Kotoko.
The 56-year-old returns to South African domestic football after leaving the Ghanaian Premier League club abruptly for personal reasons. He takes charge of the ambitious KwaZulu-Natal side following the departure of Tunisian coach Khalil Ben Youssef.
Ben Youssef left Durban City after an unconvincing opening seven matches, during which the team struggled to build momentum in the league. Tinkler has been handed the task of improving results and providing greater consistency.
Durban City have collected seven points from a possible 21 this season. Their record stands at one win, four draws and two defeats from their first seven league fixtures, leaving the club in a difficult position.
The former coaching team did guide the side into the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup, but the poor domestic campaign eventually led the club’s hierarchy to make a change.
Tinkler now inherits a squad that needs an immediate improvement in its league form as Durban City attempt to recover from their disappointing start.
