Sphelele Mkhulise: Sundowns midfielder explains decision to reject Chiefs move
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise says staying with the club was an easy decision because Chloorkop feels like home, despite his limited opportunities in the starting line-up.
The 30-year-old spoke at Sundowns’ media open day on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, explaining why he committed his future to the reigning champions under what he described as inspiring leadership.
Mkhulise signed a new two-year contract in January 2026, with the option of a further year, ending speculation over his future. He had been strongly linked with a lucrative move to Premiership rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
The midfielder instead chose to remain with Sundowns after making only 15 Betway Premiership appearances during the 2024/25 domestic campaign.
“[I stayed] because I’m in my happy place and it feels like I’m at home here at Sundowns, so for me to sign the new contract was a no-brainer,” Mkhulise said.
The academy graduate also credited the club’s leadership with helping him remain motivated during periods when regular first-team football was difficult to secure.
“The leadership inspires us, and they keep us motivated to give our best for the badge that is what has kept me here for so long. We have the greatest leadership in the country.”
He added: “So they keep us motivated to do well each and every day. To wake up in the morning and come here. And to work hard and to do well because we don’t want to disappoint them. So that’s what’s kept me going for so long.”
Mkhulise preparing for MTN8 final
Mkhulise has featured more regularly during the current campaign, making five league appearances among eight outings in all competitions.
His versatility and experience could prove important in the coming fixtures, particularly with midfielders Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas unavailable because of injury.
His immediate focus is the MTN8 final, where Sundowns will face Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 10 October 2026.
The sold-out final will kick off at 18:00, with Sundowns seeking early silverware. Mkhulise will hope to reward the club’s faith in him with a decisive contribution in the showpiece.
