Jules Koundé wants to stay at Barcelona

France international of Beninese descent Jules Koundé has no intention of leaving Barcelona despite losing his place in the starting lineup under head coach Hansi Flick this season.

The French defender has found himself competing for regular minutes, with Eric García emerging as Flick’s preferred option at right-back in recent weeks. Koundé has been left on the bench for Barcelona’s last three La Liga matches, raising questions about his situation at the Catalan club.

His reduced role has reportedly attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, who are monitoring his availability ahead of the January transfer window.

However, according to Spanish newspaper Sport, Koundé is not considering a move away from Barcelona this winter and remains determined to fight for his place in Flick’s team.

The 27-year-old reportedly believes the competition for places remains open and is confident he can force his way back into the starting lineup as the season progresses.

Koundé’s versatility could work in his favour. Although he has been used extensively at right-back, he is also capable of playing at centre-back, giving Flick another option when selecting his defensive lineup.

The French international is under contract with Barcelona until June 2030, putting the club in a strong negotiating position should interest from abroad turn into formal offers.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been linked with an interest in Koundé’s situation, particularly amid uncertainty over his current role at Barcelona.

Despite the reported Premier League interest, Koundé’s priority remains proving his value at Barcelona rather than seeking a new challenge elsewhere.

With a long season ahead and plenty of fixtures still to come, the defender has opportunities to change his situation. His ability to make the most of those chances could determine whether he regains his place as one of Flick’s regular starters.
