Michael Olise already ‘world-class’, says Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany says Michael Olise has already reached world-class status after the winger continued his excellent form for both club and country.

Olise scored four goals and created two more in four appearances for France during the international break, maintaining the rapid progress he has made since moving to Bayern Munich from Crystal Palace in 2024.

Kompany rejected the idea that Olise’s development is primarily the result of his coaching, saying the 24-year-old possessed the qualities required to succeed at the highest level before arriving in Munich.

“I think a player with Michael Olise’s talent would always make it. He would always be one of the best players,” Kompany told RTL.

“It’s not just his talent, but also his mentality and his eye for detail. He always seems to spot something that others might not see, and that applies in training as well.”

Asked directly whether he regarded Olise as a world-class player already, Kompany gave an unequivocal response.

“Yes, of course. Without a doubt,” he said.

The Bayern manager believes Olise’s attitude will be as significant as his technical ability as he seeks to remain among the leading players in the game.

“He has taken many steps forward in recent years. But the most important thing for a coach in a situation with players like this is that the hunger remains,” Kompany said.

“At our club, you get praise for what you achieve and how you work in training, and for what you deliver and do in a game. And if that is no longer there in a game, then we immediately have that discussion about how we can continue taking the next steps.”

Olise has made an impressive start to the new season, registering eight goals and four assists in seven appearances for Bayern.

However, Kompany says the winger’s ability was evident long before his move to Germany and that Bayern’s role is to help him continue progressing rather than create an elite player from scratch.

“That’s the role we play, but it’s not about turning a player into a world-class player. That’s impossible. He already has that within himself,” he said.

Bayern will next rely on Olise’s form when they travel to face Augsburg in the Bundesliga at the WWK Arena on Saturday.
