Yan Diomande’s rapid rise at Real Madrid has been interrupted by the international break, leaving the Ivorian winger with a fresh challenge to prove he deserves a regular starting place ahead of Vinicius Junior.
The 146m euros signing had initially struggled to deliver the level expected of such a major investment. However, his recent performances had begun to change perceptions inside the club, with some at Real Madrid calling for him to be selected in the starting line-up instead of Vinicius Junior.
Diomande’s progress has been built on qualities beyond individual flair. His defensive discipline has stood out in recent matches, while his attacking output has also improved, particularly through a rise in the number of assists he has provided.
That combination has seen him develop from a controversial signing into an increasingly important tactical option for Real Madrid. Yet his involvement with Ivory Coast brought that momentum to a halt, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.
The winger played 209 minutes for the Elephants across three matches against Cameroon, Somalia and Ghana. He completed two of those games and came on as a late substitute in the third, allowing him to maintain his match rhythm during the international interval.
Diomande now returns to the Spanish capital facing a significant test. He must not only reproduce the form he showed before the break, but also demonstrate that he has a lasting role in Real Madrid’s plans. Failure to do so could see doubts over his future re-emerge.
The 146m euros signing is capable of playing on either flank, and expectations are that he will remain part of Jose Mourinho’s starting group when competitive football resumes. His return could lead to major changes in Real Madrid’s attack, with Arda Guler and even Vinicius Junior potentially affected.
For now, however, those possible changes remain unresolved. Diomande’s immediate task is to ensure the international break has not stalled the progress that had placed him at the centre of the debate over Real Madrid’s attacking line-up.
