Spain secured their place in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals after Mikel Merino scored in the 89th minute to complete a 2-1 comeback win over Croatia on 6 October 2026.
The result gave Spain a fourth consecutive victory in the group stage and moved them to 12 points at the top of the table. Croatia remain third on three points after suffering another defeat.
Croatia took the lead in the 18th minute through Ivan Perisic. The experienced forward reacted first to a rebound after Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon had made the initial save, sending the ball into the net.
Spain struggled to find their rhythm during the opening period as Croatia committed fully to their attacks and made life difficult for the visitors. However, Spain increased the pressure after the interval and eventually found an equaliser in the 61st minute.
Merino finished after a sustained spell of Spanish pressure, with Spain controlling possession and posing the greater threat in front of goal. The goal rewarded their improved second-half performance and put them back on level terms.
Croatia’s task became harder in the 78th minute when Perisic was shown a second yellow card for a clear foul on Marc Cucurella. The dismissal left Croatia with 10 players for the closing stages.
Spain took advantage of the numerical advantage and continued to push for the winner. Their pressure finally paid off a minute before the end of normal time, when Merino scored again to complete his brace and secure all three points.
The victory confirms Spain’s progress to the quarter-finals, while Croatia’s total remains at three points in third place.
