Neymar has thanked Lionel Messi for making him love football even more, ahead of the Argentina captain’s final international appearance against Benin.

The Brazil forward, who played alongside Messi at Barcelona from 2013 to 2017 and later at Paris Saint-Germain between 2021 and 2023, shared an emotional message on his official Instagram account.

“Everyone who loves football has enjoyed your talent over the years,” Neymar wrote.

“Today will be your last match in the shirt of your national team and your country. I hope you enjoy every moment and that all the words of appreciation given to you today make you happy.”

Neymar said Messi’s contribution had earned recognition far beyond Argentina.

“It is not only Argentina that thanks you; the whole world thanks you for everything you have given to football,” he added.

“Thank you for making me love football even more. It was an honour to play against you and, more importantly, to make history with you.

“Thank you, Lionel Messi.”

Messi’s final game for Argentina comes after a distinguished international career, which has brought him three major honours with the national side.

He won the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, before completing his international collection by leading Argentina to the World Cup title in 2022.

The tribute from Neymar came hours before Argentina’s meeting with Benin, as praise continued to pour in for Messi and his achievements with the national team.
