Barcelona’s perfect start faces October test with six high-pressure fixtures

Barcelona’s faultless start to the season will be put under serious pressure in October, when Hansi Flick’s side face six demanding matches, including meetings with Galatasaray, Real Betis, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

The Catalan club have won every game so far, but their schedule is set to become considerably more difficult. They begin the month at home to Getafe before travelling to Istanbul for a Champions League tie against Galatasaray.

Barcelona then visit Real Betis, with another European test following soon afterwards against Paris Saint-Germain in Paris. Their most significant domestic fixture comes next, when Real Madrid visit for the first El Clasico of the season.

Alaves will bring the month’s run of fixtures to an end.

The sequence will examine not only Barcelona’s tactical quality but also the strength and depth of Flick’s squad. Many of the manager’s international players are expected to return just two days before the match against Getafe, giving him little time to prepare his strongest line-up.

Barcelona must also deal with the physical demands of three successive away games against Galatasaray, Real Betis and Paris Saint-Germain.

There is some positive news regarding the squad. Raphinha has been cleared of a serious injury and is available again, while Joan Garcia is also expected to return to the group. Their availability gives Flick additional options at an important point in the campaign.

The manager’s main task will be to strike the right balance between freshness and continuity. Excessive rotation could affect Barcelona’s momentum, but repeatedly selecting the same players every few days could increase the risk of fatigue before the month’s most important matches.

The Champions League visit to Paris Saint-Germain may offer the clearest indication of how Barcelona are coping with the demands of the schedule. Luis Enrique’s side possess enough quality to punish mistakes and could force Barcelona to spend long periods defending.

Flick will therefore need his players to be rested and fully focused if they are to withstand the intensity expected at the Parc des Princes.

The subsequent El Clasico against Real Madrid represents the biggest examination of Barcelona’s domestic form. Barcelona currently have a six-point advantage over their rivals in La Liga, meaning victory would allow them to extend that lead.

A defeat would not settle the title race, but another win would strengthen Barcelona’s position and offer further evidence that Flick’s team are capable of competing on several fronts.
