Aurelien Tchouameni uses international break to rebuild fitness at Real Madrid

Aurelien Tchouameni has used the international break to rebuild his fitness after missing much of pre-season through injury, and Real Madrid believe he is now close to returning to his best physical and sporting condition.

The midfielder spent two weeks working intensively at Valdebebas, combining group sessions with individual programmes focused on restoring sharpness, stamina and match rhythm. He had recovered in time for the derby against Atletico Madrid, but was still visibly short of rhythm and match minutes.

Tchouameni remained in Madrid after Zinedine Zidane chose not to call him up for France duty, giving him a valuable chance to focus fully on his physical preparation. Reports say his conditioning programme is progressing according to plan.

His progress matters greatly for Jose Mourinho, who values the balance and defensive strength the Frenchman brings to the team. Madrid have conceded nine goals in eight matches, and Tchouameni looked underprepared in recent appearances.

He now has another week to complete his programme before a possible return against Villarreal. With Eder Militao, Dean Huijsen and Raul Asencio unavailable, Mourinho may even use Tchouameni at centre-back.
