The international break gave Cote d’Ivoire manager Herve Renard a chance to assess several players, with Malick Yalcouye and Yann Gboho among those to strengthen their claims, according to former Ivorian international Akale Kanga.
The Elephants recorded victories over Ghana and Somalia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers before losing a friendly against Cameroon. Renard used the three matches to rotate his squad and examine a number of alternatives.
For Kanga, the opportunity to test different profiles was one of the main benefits of the latest international window.
Yalcouye and Gboho make an impression
Malick Yalcouye was the first player highlighted by Kanga. The Brighton midfielder has made a positive start to the season in England and, in Kanga’s view, his performances for Cote d’Ivoire showed that progress was not simply a temporary run of form.
Yann Gboho was another player to catch the eye. The attacker impressed with his work rate and commitment during the international fixtures.
The displays from Yalcouye and Gboho could increase competition for places in Cote d’Ivoire’s attacking areas.
Christ Tape also enhanced his prospects during the break. The full-back did not produce a spectacular performance, but his disciplined approach could allow him to become a more regular option as Renard continues to develop his squad.
Ouattara assessment remains open
Kassoum Ouattara’s situation requires a more cautious assessment, according to Kanga.
Renard deployed the player on the right, although he normally operates on the left. That decision means Ouattara may need to be judged again in his usual position before firm conclusions are reached about his place in the squad.
Work still required for trio
Kanga did not believe every player had benefited equally from the international window.
Patrick Zabi, Amadou Kone and, in particular, Rayan Fofana still have significant work to do if they are to reach the highest level of international football.
That assessment was not presented as a definitive rejection of the players, but as a reminder of the demands involved at international level.
Gambia matches next
Cote d’Ivoire’s next opportunity to assess those emerging trends will come in November, when they face Gambia on 11 and 15 November in the third and fourth rounds of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Both teams currently have six points after two matches.
Renard’s period of experimentation will gradually need to give way to a clearer pecking order. The latest international break offered some indications, while the next camps should provide greater certainty over the squad’s hierarchy.
