Quinton Fortune believes South Africa should make a move for Wanderers defender Max Conway after the 23-year-old’s impressive start to the Championship season.
The former Premier League player wants the Bafana Bafana to broaden their search across the United Kingdom and Europe for footballers eligible to acquire South African citizenship.
Conway was born in Manchester, but his maternal grandmother was born in Pretoria. The left-back has said he would be interested in exploring the possibility of representing South Africa in the future.
Fortune, who had a brief spell with Wanderers during the club’s successful Premier League era under Sam Allardyce, is strongly in favour of the idea. The former midfielder is best known for his many years at Manchester United.
“South Africa should go and get him, 20 million per cent!” Fortune said.
“My God. If there is a player who is eligible for South Africa, whether they are English, Scottish or Irish, they should look at the Irish team and what they have achieved.”
Fortune’s comments come as Conway continues to attract attention with his performances in the Championship.
