Mbappe faces fresh Real Madrid scrutiny as Mourinho warning reignites commitment debate
Kylian Mbappe’s latest injury-recovery decision has intensified concerns over his commitment at Real Madrid, with his appearance on a bicycle days after a warning from Jose Mourinho adding to growing frustration among supporters at Santiago Bernabeu.
The club’s official position remains that Mbappe has its approval for everything he does. However, that explanation is no longer convincing many Real Madrid fans, who believe the France forward increasingly acts independently of the team – and, at times, independently of his national side.
Since joining in the summer of 2024 as the “missing piece” for the holders of a 15th Champions League title, Mbappe has delivered exceptional goalscoring figures. Yet those goals have not brought a major trophy, nor have they made Real Madrid a better side. The performances of several key players have declined, most notably Vinicius Junior, who now appears far removed from the player who came close to winning the Ballon d’Or.
Injury recovery raises questions
The latest controversy followed Mbappe’s most recent injury, suffered during a match against Turkey. Unlike his team-mates, who have been following their rehabilitation programmes at Valdebebas, Mbappe underwent medical examinations lasting less than 30 minutes at the club’s facilities the day after the injury before continuing his recovery programme remotely.
That decision was interpreted as a serious misunderstanding of his responsibilities and prompted strong criticism in the Madrid media and on social media.
The debate grew after videos emerged on Sunday showing Mbappe riding a bicycle. A few days earlier, Mourinho had warned his professional players: “You cannot ride a bicycle.” The Portuguese’s comments were general rather than specifically aimed at Mbappe, but the timing revived questions about the forward’s discipline.
A social media post on 4 October 2026 highlighted Mourinho’s warning, saying that falling from a bicycle could result in a player missing three matches or breaking a leg. It added sarcastically: “Keep going Kiki, you score a lot and deserve to earn more than Vini and Hey Jude.”
Mourinho’s biggest challenge is currently understood to be finding the best partnership between Mbappe and Vinicius, something his predecessors failed to achieve. But the change of manager has not ended the wider dispute. Supporters want qualities that statistics cannot measure: commitment, leadership and the behaviour expected of a captain during difficult periods.
That demand echoes Mbappe’s well-known message to Raul Asencio: “You are a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day.” Many supporters now believe that principle is being applied mainly to players lower down the hierarchy.
A history of controversy
The criticism is not new. In October 2024, Mbappe was seen at a nightclub in Stockholm during an international break after being left out of the France squad because of a muscle injury.
In March, he travelled to Paris to consult a specialist about his knee while Real Madrid were occupied with their own commitments. Images of dinners with his partner overshadowed the medical purpose of the trip. Reports that the medical staff had examined the wrong knee were denied by Mbappe on 25 March: “The information that they examined the wrong knee is not true.” He acknowledged, however, that poor communication had contributed to the misunderstanding.
The most embarrassing episode came last May, when Mbappe was photographed on a yacht in Sardinia with his partner while recovering from a muscle injury. His team-mates were attempting to delay Barcelona’s title celebration before a decisive Clasico.
A social media post dated 29 July 2026 also showed Mbappe and Ester Exposito enjoying a luxury yacht holiday in Sardinia, Italy.
His absences from important matches have added to the criticism, including the Copa del Rey elimination by Albacete in January, in Arbeloa’s first matches in charge, and the match on 10 May. After the Oviedo game on 14 May, Mbappe said Arbeloa had told him he was the fourth-choice striker; the coach denied that claim.
He was also booed at Santiago Bernabeu against Alaves on 21 April, after the European exit against Bayern Munich. On 7 September, Mbappe questioned why only he and Vinicius were being targeted over their defensive work, confirming that the tension had not disappeared.
Real Madrid host Villarreal on Saturday, 10 October, after the international break and following their derby defeat. Mbappe’s involvement remains uncertain as he continues his recovery, but if he plays, his reception will offer a clear measure of the mood among supporters.
