Liverpool and Atletico Madrid target Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal

Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are monitoring Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal, who could leave the Catalan club permanently if he is unhappy with his role under manager Flick.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola wants to sign the 19-year-old and bring him to Anfield during the next summer transfer window. Spanish journalist Juan Jesus has reported that Liverpool’s interest is focused on a potential move in 2027.

Bernal came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy before establishing himself in the first-team squad. The Spain international has a contract with the club until the summer of 2029.

He has scored five goals and provided three assists in 44 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions so far in his career.

Writing on X, Juan Jesus said: “Bernal attracts the interest of many clubs. Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are monitoring him closely, with Diego Simeone and Andoni Iraola both great admirers of his ability and profile.”

He added: “The player wants to convince Flick, but his playing time will be assessed in June. With players such as Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Rodri considered untouchable, Bernal is not the coach’s first choice.”

Bernal’s position within the squad could therefore determine whether he remains at Barcelona. Juan Jesus continued: “If he is not satisfied with his role, a permanent transfer is very likely to become an option rather than just a loan. Barcelona do not want to sell him unless the player himself asks to leave.”

The midfielder’s future is expected to be reviewed in June, when Barcelona assess his involvement and his place among the club’s midfield options. Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are both understood to be watching the situation closely.

Barcelona’s preference is to retain Bernal, but the club’s stance could change if he requests a departure after failing to secure a regular role. The possibility of a permanent move, rather than a temporary loan, would then be considered.

The report comes as Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is spending this season at Liverpool on loan.
