Zidane praises Ronaldo’s ‘exceptional’ career after Real Madrid success

Zinedine Zidane has paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the 41-year-old forward’s achievements as “exceptional” after their highly successful time together at Real Madrid.

Ronaldo has been in the headlines in recent days after leaving Portugal’s training camp, reportedly unhappy with his departure. Zidane did not comment on that incident when asked about the Portugal captain, instead choosing to focus on his career and accomplishments.

“What he has achieved is exceptional,” said the French manager at a news conference.

Zidane worked with Ronaldo at Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018, a period in which the Spanish club enjoyed one of the most successful spells in its history.

With Zidane in charge, Real Madrid won the Champions League in three consecutive seasons, lifting the trophy in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The former France international said Ronaldo’s contribution had been central to those triumphs and praised the Portuguese player’s career.

“You have to recognise his incredible career,” Zidane said. “I was lucky to have him alongside me because he helped me win exceptional titles.

“Hats off to Cristiano! I have always had a great deal of respect for all players, but even more for those with whom I shared the stage. And particularly Cristiano, who helped us win so many titles.”
