How Bayern Munich turned Michael Olise into a Bundesliga sensation while Premier League clubs hesitated

Michael Olise has become one of the most valuable players in the Bundesliga after Bayern Munich acted decisively, while several leading Premier League clubs failed to complete a deal for the France forward when the opportunity was available.

The former Crystal Palace player left the club two years ago and is now valued at €180m by Transfermarkt, making him the most valuable player in Germany’s top flight. His rise has highlighted the difference between spending power and the ability to identify and secure talent before the competition.

Olise’s connection with English football was strong from the beginning. Born in London, he came through the academies of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City before establishing himself only a short distance from their stadiums. Yet none of those clubs managed either to retain him or bring him back.

Chelsea came closest, but missed out on the player twice. In the summer of 2023, the club triggered a £35m release clause but, according to football expert Duncan Castles, failed to complete the move because it did not follow the correct legal procedures. Olise subsequently signed a new contract with Crystal Palace.

Chelsea returned the following year but eventually withdrew in the face of the financial demands. Manchester United regarded Olise highly under two successive administrations, although that interest never developed into a formal decision to sign him. Newcastle United also left the race because of financial concerns.

Bayern, by contrast, moved with confidence. The German club was the only side prepared to meet the demands of both the player and Crystal Palace, agreeing to pay up to €60m. The fee, however, was not the only factor in Olise’s decision.

According to The Telegraph, the player chose Bayern because of the prospect of playing in the Champions League. Early discussions with manager Vincent Kompany also helped persuade him, with the coach outlining a vision that appealed to Olise.

The transfer was driven by Bayern’s sporting directors, Max Eberl and Christoph Freund. Uli Hoeness, the club’s honorary president, offered an insight into the thinking behind the move when he admitted that he had not known the French player at all. Bayern instead placed its full trust in its sporting officials.

The outcome has made the transfer look like a decisive victory for the Bundesliga record champions. Olise has gone on to record 111 appearances, 45 goals and 47 assists for the club.

He had not played for the France senior team or appeared in the Champions League when he joined Bayern. His success, therefore, was not simply a fortunate gamble, but the product of a club structure that knew what it wanted and was better prepared to recognise and secure emerging talent.
