Vozinha thought Yashin Trophy nomination was a joke after World Cup heroics

Vozinha admitted he initially believed his nomination for the Yashin Trophy was a prank after the 40-year-old Cape Verde goalkeeper was recognised among the contenders for the award given to the best goalkeeper of the year.

The veteran played a decisive role in Cape Verde’s impressive World Cup campaign last summer, helping the country reach the knockout stage. Cape Verde also caused problems for several highly regarded opponents, including Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

Vozinha’s performances attracted attention beyond the tournament and led to a move to Chilean top-flight club Colo-Colo later that summer.

His achievements were recognised again with his nomination for the Yashin Trophy, which was won last year by Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Speaking to France Football, Vozinha said he understood why some people might question his inclusion but regarded the nomination as a significant honour.

“Many will say that it is unfair, and to a certain extent, I feel that myself. When I heard the news, I thought it was a joke,” he said.

“I say this because I have immense respect for these exceptional goalkeepers who play for the best clubs and in the best leagues.

“I see this nomination above all as another reward for the whole of Cape Verde. At this stage of my career and my life, it is a genuine gift from heaven.

“So, thank you to everyone who nominated me.”
