Maluleka urges Chiefs fans to ease pressure on young star Shabalala

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka has called on supporters to stop placing excessive pressure on Mduduzi Shabalala after the 22-year-old spoke about the impact of toxic fan abuse.

Shabalala discussed the effects of the criticism during an appearance on SuperSport’s Giants show, prompting Maluleka to remind fans that the attacking midfielder remains a young player competing for one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.

Amakhosi supporters have regularly targeted Shabalala when results have gone against the team, leaving the player to deal with a significant psychological burden despite his age and responsibilities at Kaizer Chiefs.

However, his performances and statistics continue to underline his importance to the side. During the 2025/26 Premier Soccer League campaign, Shabalala scored 5 goals and provided 3 assists in 26 domestic appearances, according to Transfermarkt. He also created 37 key passes.

Those figures place “Mdu or Die” among Kaizer Chiefs’ most productive players over the past two seasons and among the Premier Soccer League’s leading performers. His creative output and direct involvement in goals have made him a key part of the club’s attacking play.

Maluleka calls for perspective

Discussing the SuperSportTV segment, Maluleka said supporters needed to recognise the human impact of their criticism. The former midfielder also has personal experience of being subjected to abuse from fans.

“Very touching, you know? But I think something that we need to touch on is that he is still very young. And he plays for a very big club, Kaizer Chiefs.”

Maluleka said criticism could quickly go beyond acceptable banter and affect a player’s ability to perform.

“You can banter and banter and crush the boy, but he still needs to go on the field and play.”

“If you’re crushing the boy, how do you expect him to go each and every weekend and play?”

“There’s a human element. Let us think about that side of it.”

Kaizer Chiefs are expected to rely heavily on Shabalala when they return to competitive action, with the club requiring him to rediscover his best form.

The Naturena-based side are scheduled to play Stellenbosch FC in a crucial Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium. The fixture was recently brought forward to 13 October 2026, with kick-off set for 19:30, to accommodate the club’s upcoming CAF Confederation Cup commitments.
