South Africa’s U23 side came from behind to beat Algeria 3-1 in a friendly in Bloemfontein on Thursday, with three Stellenbosch FC players making their mark.
Siviwe Nkwali and Luthando Vena started for Raymond Mdaka’s team, while Quwan Plaatjies was introduced from the bench after Algeria had taken the lead.
Plaatjies made an immediate impact, scoring only four minutes after coming on to bring South Africa level. The goal was especially significant for the Stellenbosch attacker, as it was his first at U23 international level.
South Africa then completed the comeback when another substitute, Faiz Abrahams, put the hosts ahead. Abrahams is currently on loan at Kaizer Chiefs from Stellenbosch FC, ensuring the club’s influence extended beyond its three directly involved players.
A third goal completed the 3-1 victory and gave Mdaka’s side momentum before the teams meet again on Sunday.
Nkwali builds on international experience
Nkwali’s appearance continued a promising period for the young defender. He was part of the South Africa U20 team that won the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations before also representing Amajita at the FIFA U20 World Cup.
Vena was given the opportunity to start against Algeria as South Africa’s young team measured itself against one of Africa’s established football nations.
The return fixture will be played on Sunday at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein. Plaatjies, Nkwali, Vena and Abrahams will all be hoping to feature again.
The involvement of the four players also underlines Stellenbosch FC’s growing contribution to South Africa’s youth national teams, with several of the club’s players gaining experience at international level.
