Mombasa United gain advantage after edging Kariobangi Sharks in Kenyan Premier League promotion play-off
Mombasa United will take a narrow 2-1 lead into the second leg of their Kenyan Premier League promotion/relegation play-off against Kariobangi Sharks after securing a crucial first-leg victory at Mbaraki Stadium.
The National Super League side produced a spirited performance in front of a sizeable home crowd on Thursday to put themselves within reach of a place in Kenya’s top flight.
Dennis Mabeya broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, calmly converting from the penalty spot to give United a deserved advantage.
The hosts then extended their lead 10 minutes later when Waziri Shentembo found the back of the net, putting United in control of the contest.
Sharks, however, ensured they remained firmly in the tie when Wayne Otieno pulled one back in the 83rd minute.
The late goal could prove crucial when the sides meet again in Nairobi on October 6, with the aggregate winner earning the right to compete in the Kenyan Premier League.
Sharks face fight to preserve top-flight status
The two-legged play-off was agreed following a mediation process initiated by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), led by president Hussein Mohammed.
The fixture was also linked to the delayed start of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League, with the composition of the top division among the issues holding up the new season.
The High Court in Murang’a had ordered that the new campaign should not begin until Sharks and Mombasa United had settled their promotion and relegation dispute through a play-off.
Sharks entered the contest as the favourites on paper after finishing second from bottom in the previous top-flight campaign. United, meanwhile, were attempting to secure Premier League status despite never having experienced football at that level.
Sharks coach William Muluya named a strong line-up, including several new signings. Collins Omondi started in goal, while Steve Mbulere, Zablon Kutera and Ian Taifa formed the defensive unit.
Ghai Panchol and captain Patilah Omotto anchored the midfield, with Faiz Opande and Keagan Ndemi supporting Frankline Amollo and Austine Tandasi in attack.
Sharks now have to overturn the one-goal deficit at home to retain their top-flight status.
Gor Mahia stand by Akonnor after continental exit
Elsewhere, Gor Mahia secretary general Nic Arum has urged supporters to remain patient with head coach Charles Akonnor following the club’s heavy CAF Champions League elimination.
The Kenyan giants were knocked out in the first preliminary round after losing 7-1 on aggregate to former champions Pyramids. Gor Mahia suffered a 2-0 defeat in Nairobi before a 5-1 loss in Cairo.
Arum believes Akonnor should not carry the blame for the disappointing campaign, pointing to the team’s lack of competitive preparation before the tournament.
“We cannot blame the coach and judge him for our exit from the Champions League. He was not exposed to competitive matches before this campaign, and that is something we have to consider,” Arum told the club’s official website.
He also defended the coach’s record in the CECAFA tournament, where Gor Mahia reached the final despite limited competitive preparation.
“Let us give him time and see what will come out of it.”
With the 2026/27 season approaching, Gor Mahia will target a record-extending 23rd league title. Their 22 championships remain 10 more than Tusker FC and AFC Leopards, who have won 12 each.
