Lucas Gourna-Douath involved in car crash near Hull City training ground

Hull City midfielder Lucas Gourna-Douath has escaped injury after being involved in a car accident on the same narrow road where teammate Sorba Thomas crashed less than three weeks ago.

Gourna-Douath, 24, was involved in a single-vehicle collision on Millhouse Woods Lane in Cottingham, East Yorkshire, on Thursday morning, with images showing a Mercedes lying on its side. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 8.30am.

Humberside Police confirmed that nobody was injured in the incident.

“Officers and emergency services were called to reports of a single-vehicle road traffic collision on Millhouse Woods Lane in Cottingham at around 8.30am this morning. Thankfully, no one was injured as a result of the collision.”

Hull City also confirmed that no one was harmed after images of the incident began circulating on social media.

The club said it was “aware of images circulating on social media following a road traffic accident near the training ground and can confirm that no one was harmed in the incident”.

The incident is the second involving a Hull player on Millhouse Woods Lane in just 20 days, raising fresh concerns about the road used by players travelling to the club’s training base.

Gourna-Douath was born in France and is of Central African Republic descent. He is a youth international for France but still eligible to play for the African country.

Thomas crash adds to growing concern

Wales international Thomas was involved in a similar incident on September 11 when his Land Rover Defender overturned on the same road.

The Hull winger also emerged unhurt despite the extent of the damage to his vehicle. The latest accident has therefore brought renewed attention to the conditions on the road leading to the club’s training ground.

Millhouse Woods Lane is a narrow residential street, with limited space for vehicles travelling in opposite directions. The road also has parked cars along sections of it, further restricting the available space.

Both incidents have involved large vehicles, with Thomas driving a Land Rover Defender and Gourna-Douath understood to have been in a Mercedes.

Residents want speed limit reviewed

The road currently has a 30mph speed limit, although residents have previously called for it to be reduced amid concerns over safety.

The latest crash has intensified those concerns, particularly because the road is also used by residents and children travelling to and from nearby areas.

Local concerns had already been raised following Thomas’ accident, with calls for greater caution from people using the route to Hull’s training ground.

There is no indication from police that speeding was responsible for either incident.

For Hull City, however, the two crashes in quick succession have placed unusual attention on the short stretch of road outside their training base.

Both Thomas and Gourna-Douath were able to walk away from their respective accidents without injury, but the repeated incidents have prompted questions about whether additional road-safety measures are needed around the training-ground entrance.
