Eric Tinkler leads Durban City coaching shortlist as Ernst Middendorp return fades
Eric Tinkler has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Khalil Ben Youssef at Durban City, with a return for Ernst Middendorp now considered unlikely.
Ben Youssef was relieved of his duties after a slow start to the Betway Premiership campaign, prompting the Durban-based club to begin its search for a new head coach.
Middendorp’s name was among those linked with the vacancy because of his previous work with the club’s hierarchy. The German has also reportedly remained connected to Durban City in a consultancy role during Ben Youssef’s time in charge.
However, sources close to the club indicate that Middendorp is not currently the most likely appointment. He has continued working away from the professional dugout since taking up a role at Urban Academy in the Eastern Cape.
Tinkler familiar to Kadodia
Soccer Laduma understands that Tinkler remains a strong option for the position. The former Sekhukhune United coach is available after recently leaving Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.
His availability comes as Durban City prepare to make a decision during the FIFA international break. The 56-year-old is already familiar to City chairman Farook Kadodia, having previously worked with him at Maritzburg United.
Tinkler had also been linked with the club before Ben Youssef was appointed earlier this year.
Durban City are expected to use the break to finalise their choice, with their next Betway Premiership fixture scheduled for October 13 against AmaZulu.
The club must also take its continental commitments into account. Any incoming coach will need to meet the relevant CAF licensing requirements to take charge from the bench.
At this stage, Tinkler is regarded as one of the strongest possibilities as Durban City consider their options, while the prospect of Middendorp returning to the KwaZulu-Natal club appears to be receding.
Middendorp was previously coach of Kaizer Chiefs and has been heavily linked with the Durban City vacancy in recent reports. Despite those links and his reported consultancy connection, indications from sources close to the situation suggest that he is unlikely to return to the bench at the club.
Durban City dismissed Ben Youssef following their difficult opening to the Betway Premiership season and are now working to appoint his successor before competitive action resumes.
The international break provides the club with time to complete the process before the meeting with AmaZulu, while the need to satisfy CAF requirements will form part of the final decision.
