Algerian winger, Percy Tau, playing for Al Ahly Club in Egypt, has found himself under scrutiny following criticism of his recent performances, particularly in light of South Africa’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after a defeat against Nigeria.
According to South African newspaper, “South Africa,” Percy Tau missed two opportunities that could have resulted in goals for South Africa, with his shots being weak and easily saved by the Nigerian goalkeeper.
The newspaper highlighted that Tau’s performance was significantly lower than in previous years, leading some to question whether he should be excluded from the national team, especially as he approaches the age of thirty.
While Tau has shown impressive performances in African and European clubs in recent years, his display in the recent tournament failed to convince.
Reports emphasized the need for more dynamic wing players in the national team, citing Maya Mbiela’s speed and ability when he participated as a substitute.
Other players, such as Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who has been excelling in the American league, have been suggested as potential replacements for Tau, although they have not been called up by coach Hugo Broos.
The Al Ahly coaching staff is deliberating whether to grant Tau a rest like other international players after the conclusion of their African Cup of Nations campaign or to include him in the squad for upcoming matches.
A source within Al Ahly revealed the dilemma surrounding Percy Tau’s participation in the match against Algeria’s CR Belouizdad in the African Champions League on February 16th. Tau’s involvement in numerous matches, combined with the risk of injury due to the demanding schedule, has raised concerns about his fitness.
Al Ahly’s management, led by coach Pitso Mosimane, closely monitors Tau’s game time to prevent injuries, preferring to manage his minutes on the pitch carefully, especially considering his importance to the team.
