Sam Johnson says Ghana’s lack of cohesion exposed in shock Gambia defeat

Ghana’s defeat by The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers highlighted serious problems in the Black Stars’ collective organisation, according to former Ghana international Sam Johnson.

Ghana made an impressive start and scored twice, but were eventually overturned by The Gambia in a surprising result. The performance raised concerns over the team’s ability to maintain its intensity, concentration and structure throughout a match.

Speaking to Footy-Africa, Johnson identified the lack of understanding between the players as one of the main reasons behind the setback.

The Black Stars produced encouraging passages during the game, but failed to sustain the same level of performance from start to finish. Their difficulties were particularly significant as Ghana continue to build a competitive side containing players from different generations.

New players still settling in

The integration of new players remains a key issue for the national team. Johnson believes the squad must develop a better understanding on the pitch if Ghana are to become more effective.

Players need time to learn each other’s movements, responsibilities and decision-making patterns. Without that cohesion, promising spells can be undermined by lapses in concentration and a loss of organisation.

Ghana’s two goals against The Gambia demonstrated the team’s attacking potential, but the collapse that followed exposed weaknesses in the way the side managed the remainder of the contest. The result showed that individual quality alone will not be enough unless the players can operate together more consistently.

Ghana must respond quickly

The defeat has increased the pressure on the Black Stars to address their shortcomings before the next stage of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Ghana will need greater stability and consistency as the campaign continues.

For Johnson, improving the team’s cohesion should be central to that process. Building stronger links between the established players and the newer members of the squad will be essential if Ghana are to make progress and approach their upcoming fixtures in better shape.
