Bahrain coach Dragan Talajic faces uncertain future after Gulf Cup exit

Bahrain manager Dragan Talajic has emerged as the first coach to face mounting pressure after a team’s elimination from the 27th Gulf Cup, following a heavy 5-2 defeat by Yemen.

Bahrain’s campaign ended in the group stage after they were beaten in the third and final round of matches. The result gave Yemen their biggest victory in Gulf Cup history and sent Bahrain out of the competition in emphatic fashion.

The defeat has also raised immediate questions over Talajic’s position. Speaking on the sports programme Doreena Ghair, journalist Fahd Al-Jardan said the Croatian had already taken leave of the Bahrain players after the loss.

“Dragan Talajic, the Croatian coach of the Bahrain national team, said goodbye to the players after the heavy defeat by Yemen and the team’s departure from the tournament,” Al-Jardan said during the programme.

The comments have led to speculation that Talajic’s departure could be confirmed officially in the coming hours. No formal announcement regarding the coach’s future was included in the report, but his farewell to the squad was presented as a clear indication that his spell with Bahrain may be nearing its end.

Bahrain’s elimination was not simply an early exit from the 27th Gulf Cup. The historic defeat placed Talajic at the centre of uncertainty and opened the possibility of a change in the team’s technical leadership.

Attention now turns to the four teams that have reached the semi-finals. Saudi Arabia will face Qatar at Alinma Stadium, while United Arab Emirates will play Oman at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium.

The winners of those two matches will meet in the final, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 6th of this month.
