Atletico Madrid join race for Brighton midfielder Yasin Ayari

Atletico Madrid are monitoring Brighton midfielder Yasin Ayari as they assess potential reinforcements for the January 2027 transfer window.

The 22-year-old Sweden international, who is of Tunisian origin, has emerged as a target for the Spanish club as they look to strengthen their midfield. However, Atletico face competition from Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle United and AC Milan, who are also understood to be interested in the player.

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Atletico’s sporting department is following Ayari closely and could make a move during the next winter transfer window. The club has already sent scouts to watch him in Sweden’s recent Nations League matches against Romania and Poland.

Ayari started both games and made a significant contribution, scoring once and providing an assist. His performances have further highlighted the qualities that have attracted interest from several of Europe’s leading clubs.

Versatility appeals to Atletico

Ayari’s ability to operate both as a defensive midfielder and in a more advanced role is one of the main reasons for Atletico’s interest.

His flexibility could suit the needs of the Madrid club’s coaching staff as they seek to gradually reshape their midfield and provide more options in possession and attacking phases.

That adaptability has become one of the Swedish midfielder’s principal strengths as he continues to establish himself as an increasingly important member of the Brighton squad.

Ayari joined Brighton from AIK in January 2023 for approximately 4 million euros. Since then, he has made 82 appearances for the English club, scoring seven goals and registering four assists.

Brighton working on new contract

The midfielder’s current agreement runs until June 2027, but Brighton are looking to secure his future. The club are expected to activate a clause that would extend his contract until June 2028.

A longer contract would strengthen Brighton’s position in any negotiations and make it more difficult for interested clubs to prise Ayari away. Atletico Madrid now appear determined to play a leading role in the race for his signature.

Brighton are set to face Sunderland in their sixth match of the English league season.
