Pep Guardiola backs Manchester City after Premier League financial breaches verdict

Pep Guardiola has publicly reaffirmed his support for Manchester City after an independent commission found the club guilty of serious breaches of Premier League financial rules.

The former City manager made his first public comments since the verdict as the club prepares to appeal findings relating to nine seasons between 2009/10 and 2017/18.

Writing on X, Guardiola addressed City supporters directly.

“I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever,” he said.

“I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran, the players, staff, Enzo and you, our unique supporters.

“Let me be clear: we will get through this together. I love you all.”

Guardiola accompanied his message with photographs from his time at the club, including images with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, celebrations after City’s 2023 Champions League triumph and Premier League title victories.

The Spaniard left City in the summer after 10 years in charge, during which he led the club through the most successful period in its history. His teams won six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League, as part of a total of 20 trophies.

The commission’s investigation covered a period that largely came before Guardiola’s arrival, although it included the early part of his tenure.

City were found guilty of arranging what the commission called “sham” contracts with commercial partners. The scheme allegedly concealed more than 830 million pounds in funding and artificially increased the club’s reported revenues.

The club denies the breaches and has strongly rejected the commission’s conclusions. City have confirmed they will appeal, with the Premier League setting Friday, October 2 as the deadline.

If the verdict is upheld, City could face significant sporting sanctions. Possible consequences being discussed include a points deduction or expulsion from the Premier League.

City chief executive Ferran Soriano has also defended the club. Supporters’ group The Citizens Trust said it was examining the commission’s findings and would consult its members and the wider fanbase.

Guardiola’s statement follows his emotional departure from City earlier this year. At the time, he told supporters there was no specific reason for his decision to leave, but added: “Deep inside, I know it’s my time.”

Although he is no longer in the dugout, his latest message underlined that his relationship with the club remains strong as Manchester City begins the next stage of its appeal against the verdict.
