AmaZulu striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya attracting interest from South Africa’s leading clubs

Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya’s goalscoring form has made him one of the most sought-after young strikers in the Betway Premiership, with AmaZulu facing growing interest in their 23-year-old Zimbabwean forward.

Ngwenya is the league’s leading scorer with eight goals, helping AmaZulu rise to third in the table and move within three points of leaders Orlando Pirates.

His performances have also caught the attention of former Orlando Pirates striker Jerry Sikhosana, who believes clubs elsewhere are beginning to monitor the player closely.

“For me, he is a player who is attracting attention from other clubs because of the level he has maintained,” Sikhosana told the Hollywoodbets Sports Blog.

That could leave AmaZulu having to resist approaches from the country’s biggest clubs, should Ngwenya maintain his current form.

Interest from Sundowns, Chiefs and Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns have established a reputation for signing leading players in South African football, while Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have also shown a willingness to invest heavily when they identify a target.

AmaZulu have already lost important players to bigger clubs in recent times. Orlando Pirates signed winger Tshepang Moremi from Usuthu in June 2025 after accepting an offer for the player.

Mamelodi Sundowns have also recruited from AmaZulu, signing defender Wandile Dube. The 22-year-old became the club’s eighth signing of the current campaign.

AmaZulu have traditionally operated in a different section of the transfer market, developing players before selling them when a suitable opportunity arises. Ngwenya, however, may be a more difficult player to replace given his contribution this season.

The striker’s goals have been central to AmaZulu’s challenge near the top of the Betway Premiership, making his immediate future a significant issue for the club.

AmaZulu rule out January departure

Despite the attention surrounding Ngwenya, AmaZulu have indicated that they have no intention of selling him during the current season.

The Citizen reported earlier this month that a source close to the club had ruled out a mid-season departure and said AmaZulu would not be willing to consider offers in January.

“No, that’s not going to happen. He’s not for sale at this stage of the season and I don’t think the club will listen to offers even in January,” the source told The Citizen.

The source said keeping Ngwenya was essential if AmaZulu were to remain serious about competing near the top of the table.

“Why would the club sell him now when they also need him. It wouldn’t make sense to cash in at the moment,” the source added.

Ngwenya’s market value is likely to increase with each goal, but his importance to AmaZulu is increasing at the same time. For now, the club’s position is clear: their leading scorer is not for sale.
